I have a lot of memory modules which are damaged. What is it memory module? People commonly call it as RAM (remm). But it was years ago. Maybe now we just call it as memory. Or call it as it’s model name directly such as DDRAM or SDRAM or DDR2, DDR3. FYI, RAM is stands for Random-Access Memory.
This is a laptop’s RAM. It is shorter then Desktop’s RAM.
Today, there are many types of RAM. Some of them are DDR3 1333, 800 DDR2, DDR3 1600. The speed is increasing faster each day. Now, I think, I would have lost if I do not check the motherboard’s manual first before buying the RAM.
The RAM’s price is volatility as stock market. Sometime ago I bought a 1 Gig DDR2 RAM, the price was about RM90. After a month I want to add more RAM, but the price had already increased to RM140. It is from same brand, same store. But normally, the price of this computer stuff is always decreasing. Only when there are special cases, the hardware price will rise.

There was another case where the prices of computer stuff go up and down. This is about the price of dot matrix printer Panasonic KX-P1121. At first, the price maintains RM300 more or less the price (If I am not wrong). Then, the color printers had flooding the market. Dot matrix printer price especially the Panasonic KX-P1121 has plummeted. If I’m not mistaken, the price had to go down to RM100. But a few months after that, the price climbed back to RM300. Now the price is maintains at about RM400.
Oh yes … I want to show you how to repair RAM using a pencil eraser.
How do we know the computer could not start due to RAM problems?
If the computer does not have any problem, we can hear the sound of one “Tit!” when the computer is first turned on. But, if there is a problem with the RAM, you could hear ‘Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttttt! ” ‘Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttttt! ” ‘Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttttt!’, repeatedly. Do not be confused with the sound of one ”Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttttt!”. If the sound heard once, it tell it is a RAM problem, but VGA or monitor the problem.
Sometimes the computer cannot be turned on and there is no sound at all. Only the cpu fan and the power supply fan is running. Remove all the RAM and turn it back on. If there is ’Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttttt! ” sound heard repeatedly, it is mean there is problem with the RAM. But if there is still have no sound heard, then there might be other things that are damaged.
One more thing to see is the computer got not enough RAM, but as it should have. It have 1 + 1 = 2 Gig RAM. But in the ‘system properties’ window it is only show 1GB. This means that there is only one faulty module and another one module is not damaged.
Not all faulty RAM can be repaired using pencil eraser. The one which can be repaired is when it has dirty ‘contacts’. The dirty ‘contacts’ will make the problem as I wrote earlier. The contacts can be cleaned by rubbing the eraser on the ‘contacts’ slowly and repeatedly. Rub on the ‘contacts’ as shown in the image below:
Then clean it a little with your finger. Do not use cloth, because it will develop static electricity and damage motherboards.
Then put the RAM back into the motherboard’s RAM slot. Try to switch the computer on. If it can be turned on, your money is saved. If there is still symptom of RAM damaged, you can try to clean it again. If you already gave up, means it could not be saved, then I think you have go to buy a new one.
